PRESENTED BY MOA JANES
After her acclaimed string duo Catch Pop String Strong Vienna based Serbian singer and viola player Jelena Popržan created an even more dynamic setting with her All Women Quartet Madame Baheux (actually a French spelling of Viennese slang word „Bahö“ meaning jolly, creative chaos). Immediately after their founding Madame Baheux received Austrian World Music Award in Porgy & Bess and were more frequently seen on European stages. Their Bravado is surely a lucky fusion of their member’s individualities:
Guitarist Ljubinka Jokić from Banja Luka, Bosnia, contributes Jugo-Rock spirit and her raw soul voice, Lina Neuner from Vienna her compositional skills and jazzy subtelty, Maria Petrova from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, solid Rock and Jazz craftship and mastering of complex Bulgarian rhythms, and Jelena Popržan from Vojvodina beneath her outstanding voice and string playing a bunch of skills like acting, comedian talent and a strong political commitment.
Don’t even try to pidgeonhole Madame Baheux as „Balkan folk band“. If you avoid this, you’ll get rewarded enough with wild complex Balkan tunes and breathtaking songs. But also with Jazz, Rock, artsy compositions and politically engaged and satirical songs by B. Brecht, Ewan MacColl, Georg Kreisler, J. Popržan and Austrian writer Richard Schuberth.
