Millions of Americans are either full-time freelancers or do independent contractor work.
What many of them may not know is that some cities require a permit to work from home.
It's a good idea to check your local ordinances. If you rent, inform your landlord.
If you don't have a permit and need one, municipal responses can vary.
At best, they may send you a letter telling you to get a permit and possibly pay a fine.
