Ragu and Ketu – The Story\r
There were many fights between Devas and Asuras. But at one fight, the asuras were more powerful because of their guru Shukra (planet Venus). Shukra has the power of Sanjivini power. This power is used to convert the death asuras back to life.\r
Deaths starts to increase in Devas armies, but there was not even a single death at the side of Asuras because of the Sanjivini power.\r
Deva Indra went to Lord Vishnu for help, Lord Vishnu said surrender this time, you need to drink the amrita(nectar of immorality) so that you can also be immoral and defeat the asuras\r
Deva Indra surrenders with Asuras. Now the devas has to drink the Amrita so that they can defeat the asuras in the next fight.\r
The Amrita is present in the ocean of milk. The devas should churn the ocean in order to get the Amrita, but the devas are not strong enough to churn the ocean\r
As per the advice of Lord Vishnu, the devas made peace with asuras and asked the help of them to churn the ocean. The Asuras and Devas made an agreement to share the nectar of immorality after churning.\r
The churning of ocean took place several years, then Lord Vishnu took an incarnation(Kurma avatar) to get the amrita. The asuras got the amrita before devas could take.\r
Lord Vishnu then converted into a Mohini(a beautiful girl) and dances. the Asuras got lured by her beauty and danced with her. Then Mohini says that give the amrita, I will distribute equally to all of you both asuras and devas.\r
Then the asuras gave the nectar to Mohini. She asked everyone to stand in a row so that she will give small quantities to everyone. She also said that the asuras have to stand after the devas.\r
Mohini then starts to give the nectar to the devas one by one. The asuras are waiting patiently for their turn.\r
One asura SvarBhanu realized that Mohini is Lord Vishnu and he found that Lord Vishnu is going to share the nectar only with devas. He suddenly switched the sides and stood between Surya(sun) and Chandra (moon). \r
Mohini then gave a portion to SvarBhanu also. Immediately SvarBhanu drank the nectar before sun and moon could find that SvarBhanu is not a deva and he is a asura.\r
Sun and moon then went to Mohini to inform this, Mohini became very angry and converted back to Lord Vishnus form and threw Sudarshana chakra. SvarBhanu is cut into 2 pieces. \r
SvarBhanu did not die as he drank the nectar, then Lord Brahma took a snake and divides the snake into 2 parts, then he attached the two parts to the asura.\r
SvarBhanus head and the body of the snake became Rahu. SvarBhanus body and the snakes head became Ketu.
