On todays Did You Know Disney, I talk about the history of a few hotels, rides, and parks themselves that went through name changes over the years.\r
\r
First up is the famous log flume ride, Splash Mountain! Did you know that the ride was originally going to be named Zip-a-dee River Run, after the song used in the attrion, Zip-a-dee-doo-da. However Disney CEO at the time Michael Eisner insisted that the ride be named Splash in order to cross promote the attrion with the similarly named Touchetone Filmsstarring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks. The name didnt stick at first but it would eventually be combined with the decision to make the ride another one of the Disney mountains, and thats how we got Splash Mountain!\r
\r
Then we have Disneys Contemporary Resort! Did you know that the Contemporary was the hotels working name originally? Months before opening, the hotel was given a new name: The Tempo Bay Hotel. Tempo was short for contemporary and bay represented Bay Lake, which it sat on the shore of.\r
\r
However Walts surviving brother Roy didnt like the name, and preferred the original name. So less than a week later the Tempo Bay Hotel was renamed back to the Contemporary Resort.\r

How about Epcot? Older fans know that Epcot wasnt always called Epcot. In f, when the park originally opened it was called EPCOT Center. The name was originally meant to represent that it would be the center of the eventual EPCOT city. Over time those plans were dropped, and in 1994 the park was renamed to Epcot 94. The naming convention was meant to mimic the worlds fair, in which Epcot was heavily inspired by. Likewise the name was changed yet again the following year to Epcot 95. By 1996 however the name style would be dropped and the park would be finally renamed to what we call it today: Epcot.\r
\r
Speaking of Epcot, what about Horizons, one of the most famous Epcot attrions? Did you know that the original name for Horizons was going to be Century 3? The name would reflect the future of Americas third century, and the ride would see guests visiting America during its tricentennial. However Disney decided that the naming might get lost on international visitors, so the ride was renamed to Future Probe. The new name didnt last either, as it was seen as being too cold and clinical. The imagineers then settled on a name that represented our look to the horizon of tomorrow, Horizons. \r
\r
Lastly, and perhaps the best instance of renaming at Disney, was the name of the whole place itself. While EPCOT would be a major part of the project, Walt had called the property as a whole Disney World.\r
\r
Unfortunately Walt passed away before he saw Disney World get built, and his older brother Roy postponed his retirement to make sure the first phase of Disney World was completed. On top of that, he wanted to make sure that everyone visiting Disney World would always remember his little brother, the man who made it all happen, Walt Disney.\r
\r
That is why he renamed Disney World to Walt Disney World.
