In the first chapter we are presented with the setting of the book. It is set on a farm and the animals in the farm gather at night to hear a speech from the most respected animal on the farm. A pig named Old Major. He tells the animals to revolt against the humans and teaches them a revolution song shown below. \r

How does the life of an animal pass?\r
In endless drudgery.\r
Whats the first lesson an animal learns?\r
To endure its slavery.\r
How does the life of an animal end?\r
In cruel butchery.\r
Beasts of England! Beasts of Ireland!\r
Beasts of land and sea and skies!\r
Hear the hoofbeats of tomorrow!\r
See the golden future rise!\r
Now the day of beasts is coming,\r
Tyrant man shall lose his throne\r
And the shining fields of England\r
Shall be trod by beasts alone.\r
Pull the rings from out your noses\r
Tear the saddle from your back!\r
Bit and spur must rust forever,\r
Cruel whips no more shall crack.\r
Beasts of England, seize the prizes,\r
Wheat and barley, oats and hay,\r
Clover, beans and mangel wurzel\r
Shall be ours upon that day.\r
Bright will shine the fields of England\r
Purer shall its waters be\r
Sweeter yet shall blow its breezes\r
On the day that sets us free\r

For that day we all must labour\r
Though we die before it break\r
Cows and horses, geese and turkeys\r
All must toil for freedoms sake\r
