Now that the new ‘Punisher’ teaser has dropped, Mike Calabro is here to talk about writer Garth Ennis’s impact on the character and what it means for the upcoming Netflix series.
Since Marvel began putting their street level heroes on Netflix, Punisher has been one of the most anticipated series in the entire MCU. Punisher is a simple character on the surface, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find one of Marvel’s most complex creations - a lot of that is thanks to writer Garth Ennis. Punisher was created long before Ennis entered the scene, but besides the excellent ‘Punisher: War Zone’ series, there wasn’t really a definitive Punisher run until Garth Ennis came along.
The character was in a sorry state before the run that gave us the Garth Ennis Punisher. Welcome Back Frank was our re-introduction to Frank Castle after years of neglect, and we were ready to accept with open arms the old Punisher. Garth Ennis set the character firmly in the Marvel Universe, where tons of characters interacted with the Punisher: Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, and more. This Garth Ennis Punisher run was the basis for the 2004 Punisher movie starring the Thomas Jane Punisher. The movie was definitely disappointing, but it wasn’t the fault of Punisher, Tom Jane.
The Marvel Knights Punisher run was a lot of fun, but the next series would be the real defining series for Garth Ennis: ‘Punisher Max.’ Published on Marvel’s adults-only Max line, Punisher Max was a gritty, violent and dark take on the psychopathic anti-hero. It’s what finally solidified the Punisher as a character decades after his initial creation, and it’s been irreversibly tied to him ever since.
