Chuck Adams, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter put out his appropriately titled single, “Take Me As I Am,” through 300 Entertainment on November 10. His story/journey brings to mind the old adage, “be careful what you wish for.” As a kid, he loved all kinds of music especially singer-songwriter stuff, but hip hop consumed Chuck’s life (he was a huge Jay-Z fan). He started making a name for himself among NYC songwriters/producers and in 2008, he got invited to a songwriting camp and wound up writing Ludacris’ 2008 hit, One More Drink (feat T-Pain). A deal with Roc Nation followed and the circle was complete: the Jay-Z fan was now signed to his idol’s company and life was good. A year later he was unceremoniously dropped. It was over. Even though he knew it was never the right fit for him, it felt like the death of a dream. He moved to Nashville to pursue what he felt was his true calling, being a singer-songwriter, which meant starting from scratch. “I didn’t know anyone, but I’ve always been a bit fearless,” he says. “though I may have a new deal and a manager, the money I made years ago is gone. I’m happier than I’ve ever been, but broker than I’ve ever been. As the title implies, his song, “Take Me As I Am,” is about acceptance in both love and life. He told me that he walks into church and gets (as he puts it) “unsolicited prayers because of how I look, all covered in tattoos.” “They don’t ask me questions about myself—not that it’s their business anyway--but they immediately judge me and come up with a backstory of their own,” he says. “Same thing with music. People see me and don’t expect me to be making music that sounds like this. But this is me.”
