Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that can be passed from a pregnant woman to her unborn child. Since October 2015, over 4,000 babies have been born in Brazil with microcephaly, a brain disorder linked to the virus. The outbreak has re-ignited the debate about abortion in Brazil.

Despite the increase in Zika transmissions, 58% of Brazilians are against allowing abortion for pregnant women with the virus.

The Brazilian ministry of health estimates that up to one million women in Brazil have an abortion each year.
