The words to this hymn were written by the Jesuits in Germany in the 1600s. The hymn was published as, “Schönster Herr Jesu,” in the “Münster Gesangbuch,” in 1677. The words were translated to the English language by Joseph A. Seiss in 1873. The music comes from a Silesian folk tune from the “Schlesische Volkslieder,” published in 1842. The last verse is sung in German. It is also known as "Beautiful Saviour."
