Philippine Volcano Erupts, Raising Alert Level The Philippine's most active volcano, Mayon, exploded Monday propelling lava fragments and ash into the sky. Authorities raised the alert level to four out of five. Another explosion is possible within a few hours up to a few days. More than 27,000 people have fled the area since Mayon became more active last week. Mayon erupted about 50 times within the last 500 years, sometimes violently.
