TWITTER: Interview: The Effects of Television on Young Children\r
A healthy 4 year old child is quite verbal, with most kids talking in short sentences by age 3. Most 4 year olds climb, jump and are engaged with their environment.\r
TV and screen time are typically addressed at all well child visits. The most important thing you can do as a parent is limit your childs screen time. There should be no (ZERO) TV up to age 2 years. \r
The normal development of motor skills, language, focus and exploration are reduced by TV time or screen time. Imagine a 1 or 2 year old learning to catch or bounce a ball in real time, which is three dimensional; where as the TV is two dimensional.\r
If your child is to watch a show at age 3 or 4, it is best that they watch something like Sesame street, in which the show is interive and engaging.\r
Background TV significantly reduces a parents interion with their child. A recently published study found that parents say about 200 words, or less, in an hour to their child if the TV is on and almost 1000 words an hour if the TV is off. \r
Content is very important. Parents, be involved in the choice of content. I recall my oldest two children who, for a time, were watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and wouldout the fighting scenes. Older children may be influenced by fighting or violence, ual references and the excessive presence of alcohol commercials which increase the likelihood of them drinking. \r
You do not have to have TV at all, but if you do have TV in your home:\r
Make conscious decisions on what shows you will let your children watch\r
Watch together and inter during the show\r
Inter with your child\r
Limit screen time to 1 - 2 hours a day maximum (none prior to age 2 years)\r
\r
Watching TV prevents you from exploring your world, reading, talking to others, and intering as a family.\r
