Despite the court’s verdict, Andhra Pradesh’s East and West Godavari have witnessed betting and cockfight in large number. The blood sport has become more organised and violent in coastal Andhra Pradesh on the occasion of Sankranti. The Supreme Court gave directions that blades and betting must be kept away from the traditional sport. Illegal activities such as gambling also noticed during the event. The cockfight organisers tie three to four-inch razor-sharp knives to both the legs of the cocks. Victory is declared only after the opponent cock dies or is fatally injured during the fight. The game rooster cost ranges anywhere between Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending upon the breed.
