Number 4 Cake Tutorial - This tutorial shows how to make a number cake, this ones a number 4 racing car cake made from two layers of 12 inch sponge.\r

Our 12 inch cake recipe is made from 2 layers of:\r
525 grams of self raising flour\r
525 grams of butter\r
525 grams of caster sugar\r
9 eggs\r
\r
HOW THE CAKE IS MADE:\r
The first layer of cake is left to cool and then cut before being placed on top of the other tier of cake and used as a template to ensure both layers are cut to the same size.\r
\r
We then spread a layer of jam and buttercream between cake layers, buttercream the cake and place in the fridge for a few hours to firm up.\r
\r
Black fondant is rolled around the outside of the cake and pressed into the cake and smoothed into place. \r
\r
Grey fondant is rolled and placed on top of the cake and trimmed so it is level with the edge of the black fondant and the black and grey fondant edges are smoothed together.\r
\r
As the number 4 cake is going to be a race track themed cake, we create a barrier with small 3/4 inch cut sticks of fondant alternated in red and yellow sticks all around the outside of the cake.\r
\r
We make fondant white and black chequers and add to the edges of the cake board along with a chequered finish line on the cake.\r
\r
We make racing cars with blocks of fondant, black discs for the wheels and then adding a round piece of fondant for the helmet on each car.\r
