Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #180!
Spent New Year's Eve at this ginormous squatters' encampment waaaay down south in California, in a godforsaken corner of the desert just across the Mexican border. This is one of the last places in California where you can live for free -- a demolished military base, with only the concrete slab foundations remaining, upon which squatters have built haphazard shanties and dwellings where they have lived for DECADES, in some cases! Many of the inhabitants are sketchy addicts...but an equal number are free-thinkers, artists and off-gridders who just want to live somewhere unburdened by the b.s. of suburbia. The people I encountered here were without exception kind, creative and generous...and I will not hesitate to go back. These are fringe-dwellers...in other words, MY PEOPLE :-)
