Astronaut John Young, Who Led Mission to Moon, Dies at 87 Young commanded the first space shuttle mission and was the first astronaut to fly to space six times. He died on Friday at his Houston home due to pneumonia complications. Young flew two Gemini missions, two Apollo missions and two space shuttle missions. He was the ninth person to step foot on the lunar surface.
