FDA Approves Gene Therapy for Inherited Blindness Now, a new DNA-altering medication can reverse inherited progressive blindness. Luxturna is the first gene therapy to treat the genetic disease. Between 1,000 to 2,000 people in the U.S. inherit the faulty gene. The treatment replaces the faulty genes with normal ones reversing the mutations' negative effects.
