The Artist -- Susmit Sen

Susmit Sen has had an illustrious career spanning 20 years... and Depths of the Ocean is a mosaic of riffs, sounds, melodies and compositions that has lived with him through more than half of that time span. But it was only on December 2011 that it was finally ready for a formal release.

And apart from the obvious mastery and soul-connect it also has, like the man himself, a meditative and soulful quality.

Depths of the Ocean is a non-lyric album with just 2 lines of poetry written specially for City Lights by longtime friend and collaborator on most Indian Ocean tracks, Sanjeev Sharma. It is harmonized by the incredible vocal mastery of a wide range of exciting collaborators:

* The insurrectionist sensation - Papon,
* Lead singer of Parikrama - Nitin Malik
* Hindustani Classical Maestro - Shubha Mudgal
* The rich tones of a protest singer from decades ago - Sari Roy
* The velvet vocals of Indian Ocean - late Asheem Chakravarty

The compositions also feature an entire ensemble of very talented musicians exploring a wide range of musical instruments, playing techniques and sounds - Nikhil vasudevan (drums), Gyan Singh (Tabla, Kanjira and Dimri) , Rajeev Raja (Flute), K. Gunasekhar (Keyboards), Clarence Gonsalves & Brennon Denfer (Bass), Sudhir Rikhari , Gaurav Sajjanhar, Anuradha Sajjanhar (Vocals) and recorded at Susmit's own studio Studio Beat Route.
Depths of the Ocean and its maverick creator have traveled extensively across the US and India. And it's often been said of this quiet, dignified performer that he is one of the few musicians ...
"..who acknowledges the creative needs of fellow musicians and is unfailingly sensitive to their requirements -- a trait that makes the musician even larger than his music..."
Anindita Mitra, DNA

The highly respected avant-garde musician Susmit Sen is known for his amalgamation of Western Classical Jazz and Rock with Hindustani Classical & Folk Styles. But more importantly he is known for his innovative style of playing...
" Susmit Sen's fluid guitar lines recall Jerry Garcia & John McLaughlin at their best"
Simon Sweetman , The Dominion Post

Apart from his Indie Music creation & performances he has also designed music for several award winning documentaries and a feature. His varied and very interesting filmography includes

* Internationally acclaimed & much awarded Documentaries like In the Forest Hangs a Bridge (Sanjay Kak), Harvesting Hunger (Krishnendu Bose), A Season Outside (Amar Kanwar), Mira's Family (Saba Dewan)

* Feature Films like Road to Ladhakh and others like Black Friday, Jhini, Peepli Live in collaboration with his band Indian Ocean

The humane maestro with the magical fingers has also mentored several young musicians, collaborated with a wide array of celebrated musicians, performed solo concerts in India & the world over, addressed seminars & workshops for corporate honchos as well as school kids...is an equally passionate cook, foodie, wild life photographer and ornithology & dog breed enthusiast... and has also crafted the Indian Ocean sound.

Susmit Sen is also the founder & lead guitarist of the country's longest running, most popular live band Indian Ocean.
