When Kate Aumonier pitched up at Ben Parker's front door in late 2006, it was a musical meeting of minds. Both had already served their time in the record industry, experiencing the glorious highs and the inevitable lows. By this point, their credentials were clear and their focus was sharp.
Ben can remember the first time he heard Kate's voice. It was on a demo provided by a friend. "I thought she had one of the best voices I'd ever heard. I know that sounds cheesy, but I stand by that. I just listened to these songs over and over and decided I had to work with her."
Their musical partnership began tentatively, with the pair meeting up sporadically for writing sessions over the course of 18 months. "There came this point," Kate recalls, "where Ben was singing something and I sang over the top, and I said to him: 'This is cool, we should try and sing this together,' and that was it. It just clicked. I realised I didn't want to sing on my own anymore."
Ben and Kate admit that in many ways they are chalk and cheese. Their differing personalities undoubtedly contribute to the richness, the potency and the heartfelt emotion that is Chains. Not only do these battle-scarred singer-songwriters have experience on their side, they have come together at the peak of their powers. What could be better than that?
