PRESENTED BY KAREN MALONEY
Brett Newski writes heaps of songs and tours his face off in an effort to keep his A.D.D. under control. There are two people who refer to his style as, "American Folk Armageddon," which happens to be the name of his new record. Other people tell me he sounds like the Violent Femmes, Frank Turner, Jake Bugg and Ben Kweller.
In 2011, he was job-less, girl-less and band-less so he bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok and wandered around for six months, recording in dirt-floored makeshift studios in the hills of Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Lost, he moved to Saigon, Vietnam on a $100 motor-scooter. He soon found himself writing music for tampon ads for Saatchi and Saatchi where the creative director called him "The Vagina King of Vietnam."
Back in 'Nam, he wrote nearly 100 power-folk songs. After two years and two albums, he choked down his final bowl of pig ear soup and boarded a flight to America. Since then, he has graduated from his parents basement and spent his time touring the world 200+ dates per year, including Europe, Australia and South Africa.
