Nettie is the granddaughter of Alan Freed -- the legendary DJ who gave the world the phrase "rock and roll." With a music publisher father and a rock archivist mother, she grew up around the music business, intrigued by songwriters who she characterizes as, "...interesting, educated and incredible." At age eight, she wrote her first song and one year later met multi-instrumentalist and teacher Fred Sokolow who taught her flatpicking and strumming. With his mentorship, she was indelibly linked with the musical legacy of Hank Williams, Flatt & Scruggs and Ernest Tubb.

Forming her first band with her friends at a boarding school in Ojai, Nettie discovered a love for performing. Returning to L.A., her musical style evolved on stage and in the studio. Her collaborators include three-time Grammy-winning producer/mix engineer Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West.) She expanded her musical liaisons, continuing composing with Sokolow and recording in Nashville with Canadian triple Juno-Award winner Colin Linden (Lucinda Williams, The Band.)

Her 2013 debut album tracked both at Sound Emporium in Nashville and at a small studio in Santa Monica, was mixed by Niko Bolas at his "Surf Shack" room at Hollywood's Capitol Records. It was Bolas who suggested the collection's title, People I Know. "I wrote it like a chapter book," Nettie says. "These songs are for other people to interpret as they will." A low-budget video of "For My Young Lord Drake" illuminates Nettie as a tarnished angel sipping from a silver flask.

Nettie is now performing with her band, recording new songs, and traveling to Nashville to co-write and create. She rescued a 110-lb mutt named Maverick who is her loyal companion, and she attends college locally. Her songs are praised by songwriter friends like Will Jennings ("My Heart Will Go On") who notes, "She's got it...some special, indefinable magic to her lyrics that connect with the common man in a universal way. They are not of this time or place....she has a gift that's quite remarkable."
