Jonathon Linaberry who writes and performs as The Bones of J.R. Jones is a solo act, not created from intention, but born out of necessity. Linaberry’s music and sound started to take shape when he was living in upstate New York and didn’t know any other musicians. These unlucky circumstance ended up completely shaping the sound and identity of “The Bones of J.R. Jones.” The only bandmates accompanying him on stage are a guitar, banjo, a bass drum and a high-hat. This has simplified his show but also made playing live incredibly challenging. He can’t blame anyone for the mistakes on stage, can't fire himself and is solely responsible for the experience the audience has. Linaberry remains of disciple of 20th Century folk and Blues artist like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin’ Hopkins, the influences of which have come to define his sound, but his growth as a musician in evident in the more modern sounds and influences he has let creep into this new album. From incorporating electric guitar, listening to artists like Sylvan Esso, to even incorporating elements of pop music, Linaberry is casting a much wider musical net with the Bone’s of J.R. Jones on the Spirit’s Furnace, finding that delicate balance of creating music that is fresh and new, but familiar at the same time.
