ADNAN OKTAR: Timbrel is an ancient musical instrument. The Torah makes mention of women playing timbrels and dancing. The Prophet David (pbuh), too, dances to the tune of timbrels. His wife tries to humiliate him, but he purposely continues to dance, "celebrating with all his might." His wife tells him, "Do you feel no shame dancing in front of people like that?" to which the Prophet David (pbuh) replies, "I am dancing before my God." Upon hearing this, his wife cannot find her words, as she has not known that it was his faith that led to his celebration.

"Wearing a linen ephod, David..." He is wearing a linen shirt. "Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might," before whom? The Torah states, he was dancing before God, not before his people. Although he was dancing among his people, he was actually dancing before God his Lord; this is an important detail. "So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet." 'The ark of the Lord' here is the Ark of the Covenant. "As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window." And when she saw King David leaping and dancing," note how the Torah reemphasizes the Prophet David's (pbuh) dancing, "...before the Lord, she despised him in her heart Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, 'How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!'" To which, the Prophet David (pbuh) replies, "It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when He appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel." This is a wonderful remark; the Prophet David (pbuh) says, "God did not choose your father or anyone from his lineage when He appointed me ruler over the people of Israel.  I am dancing before God, not before you —I will celebrate before the Lord," he reemphasizes. We, too, will keep on celebrating. There will be music and dancing, no matter how loud they object. We will overcome any objections by this explanation time and time again.
