New HIV vaccine could be on the horizon

For the first time in history, two HIV vaccine studies are being conducted at the same time. Researchers announced on Thursday they are testing trials in the Southern and sub-Saharan regions of Africa. The first study involves a two-vaccine combination by Johnson & Johnson. The second study involves a long-acting injectable drug by GlaxoSmithKline. Participants in the study are primarily women, who post greater risks for all new HIV infections in Africa. The trial will be conducted for the next 3 years.
