Global Butter Shortage Threatens France’s Croissants

Is there a croissant crisis?

The French consume more butter than anyone else — and they're running out. Some say it's the worst shortage since WWII, and could threaten the coveted croissant, which relies on baked-in butter to give the pastry its consistency.

Many blame the E.U. for the shortage, since it abolished milk quotas in 2015, which increased the price of butter. Since last year, prices have nearly tripled since, and French businesses are refusing to pay up, leaving customers hungrier than ever for their breakfast pastries.
