A remarkable video from the Newsflare archive of a man releasing a mountain lion from a live trap in South Dakota, US.

In the dramatic footage, captured by Justin Casey and his wife near their home in Black Hills National Forest, West Pennington in 2015, Justin carefully approaches the trap and films the wild cat inside.

Providing commentary over the video, Justin explains: “I just came down to check my boys' fox trap this morning… they use a live trap so they can let animals go. When we came down here we had an unexpected surprise – a beautiful lion in the trap, and she is not happy.”

“Mountain lion season is going on right now, but it’s illegal to trap lions, so we’re going to let her go and hopefully she makes it through the season without somebody shooting her.”

Justin then hands the camera to his wife while he eases the door of the trap open, allowing the lion to run back into the forest unharmed.

“My husband enjoys teaching our two young boys about everything outdoors. We live in an area with lots of small game such as fox, raccoons and bobcats. This is a live trap, which is harmless and painless to animals” Justin’s wife later wrote online.

“It is checked every day, sometimes twice a day. We do live in an area with mountain lions, but it would be rare to catch one.

“Well, we were in for a big surprise when my husband checked the trap that morning! It was a huge beautiful mountain lion!

“These traps are a little tricky to release which leaves him very exposed the animal waiting inside - and she was not a very happy cat! She hissed and swiped at him multiple times. It was very intense.”
