How to Make Action Figure Sized Magic Effects for Doctor Strange (Movie Style)\r
Today Im going to show you how to recreate a magic effect from the Doctor Strangethat is scaled down to work on a the 6 inch Marvel Legends Doctor Strange ion figure by Hasbro. \r
\r
The supplies youll need for this project are:\r
A sheet of paper,\r
Plastic. I used the firm plastic packaging from a Marvel Legends box, and I also pulled off the floppy clear window from my box of pasta.\r
Ruler\r
Fine tipped Paint brush\r
Paint pallet\r
Acrylic Craft Paint. Im using an Apple Barrel shade of green called Parakeet.\r
Matte Sealant or Varnish. I like using this type (affiliate link): \r
Super glue\r
A tiny bit of wax paper\r
Tape\r
Compass\r
Scissors\r
Low temperature glue gun\r
Glue stick\r
Pencil\r
\r
In the , Doctor Stranges green magic (Im going to avoid saying what type of magic it is so you dont have to worry about spoilers) is split into 4 parts:\r
1. Hand disc\r
2. Part that Im going to call a bracelet\r
3. Arm Disc\r
4. Glowing light on the necklace\r
\r
Were going to start off with the first part, the hand disc. Youll need a ruler to help you set the pencil tip and the pointy tip of your compass so they are 7 mm apart. Make a dot on your paper and set the compass point on it and draw a circle.\r
\r
Now we need to make a smaller circle so set your compass so that the pencil and the pointy tip are 4 mm apart. Draw the second circle inside the first. Now pretend the smaller inside circle is the face of a clock and make a mark at 12 oclock, 3 oclock, 6, and 9. Then just draw a line connecting each point to make the first square. Then put a mark halfway in between each of your previous points and connect them to make the second square.\r
\r
Tape your paper pattern to some firm plastic packaging and cut out it out along the outer circle.\r
\r
Leave the pattern taped to the plastic for now and set it aside.\r
\r
Now were going to work on the second part of the effect, the bracelet looking part. To make the pattern, just measure and draw a rectangle on your paper that is 3 mm wide and 3.6 cm long. Cut it out. Next I tape my pattern to my floppy plastic from the pasta box and cut out the rectangle. \r
\r
For the third part of the effect, the arm disc, were going to need the compass again. Set the pencil and the tip of the compass 5 mm apart and draw a circle on your paper. Set the compasss pencil and tip 9 mm apart and draw a second circle that surrounds the first one. Making two squares in between the two circles.\r
\r
Cut out the pattern, tape it to some firm plastic, and cut out the outer and inner circle.\r
\r
Painting:\r
For the bracelet Im just painting a row of little circles along the plastic. Then Im going back and placing 3 dots inside each circle.\r
\r
For the arm disc, I apply a thin line of paint to trace the lines I made earlier with the pencil on the paper pattern. I paint the two circles on the interior edges of the arm disc and then paint the two squares in between them.\r
\r
For the hand disc, I paint the outer circle first before tracing my lines for the interior circle and two squares.\r
\r
Then I apply a few little paint dots in between the two circles.\r
\r
For the final part of the effect on the necklace, just apply a drop of paint the size of a head of a pin to some firm plastic, let it dry, and cut it out. I used poster mounting putty to attach it to the necklace.\r
\r
After your paint is dry, apply a layer of sealant or matte varnish to protect your paint from chipping. Use the superglue and over lap the bracelet and glue the two ends together.\r
\r
For this next step, you must use a low temperature glue gun. Put a drop of hot glue on one edge of the unpainted side of the hand disc. While the glue is warm, stick it directly on at least two of Doctor Stranges fingers and let it cool to set. After it is cool, the glue will pop right off his fingers without any damage to his hand, but now we have an imprint on the glue that lines up with his fingers. You can match up the dried glue to those fingers to attach the effect from now on and if you did it right, it will stay on there pretty well. If you mess up, peel off the glue and try again.\r
