UPDATE: It looks like developers have been making some great progress on software, if you want, check out the Trinus Gyre VR game streaming software (available on Google play, links from their website: While unfortunately this software isnt free, and i havent tried it (now that i have a real oculus), it looks very interesting and if anyone has used this software id love to hear about your experience. \r

Today we do Virtual Reality on the cheap with the Oculus Thrift!\r
Similar to other cellphone HMDs, the Oculus Thrift was born out of a desire to make a virtual reality experience at a low price point, with the added benefit of working with a computer over reverse tethering. So while I do have a Rift Dev Kit 2 on the way, making my own homemade HMDs is how i was able to start experiencing PC based VR.\r
With just a little time and patience to work through my description and about $30 dollars, just about anyone can make this DIY smartphone based Oculus Thrift, and get to using it as either a Android or PC paired head mounted display. \r
