Jabu and Lani enjoy collecting toy model cars because its an easy way to own an expensive car that they couldnt afford in real life ;) Though seriously, some of the vintage Matchbox cars are no longer available except as a toy model so thats a way of owning a piece of nostalgia too.\r
\r
Owning a large 10 or 20 pack Matchbox car set allows for easy kids car games. With that many cars you can race them, crash em and collect them to trade with other boys toy cars.\r
\r
Matchbox toys are diecast (die-cast) cars because they use the die cast method of manufure which forces molten metal into a metal or die cast under pressure until it cools. The metal used nowadays in diecast toy cars is usually a zinc alloy, though the first ones were often lead based.\r
\r
Lesney started the to diecast craze back in 1947, just after the war when they came out with the Matchbox 1-75which was incredibly popular and was so named because it always included 75 different toy vehicles in each line.\r
\r
Mattel started their Hot Wheels diecast toy cars in 1968 after complaints that they didnt have a line of toys for boys. Mattel as you know is well known for its Barbie line of dolls.\r
\r
Matchbox toy trucks and cars were so named originally after the box they came in which looked very similar to a box of matches at the time. In f, Matchbox became the generic term for diecast toy cars just like Kleenex has in some ways become the generic term for tissues.\r
\r
Diecast model cars are now commonly available in 1:64 scale as the standard, which is used both by Mattels Hot Wheels and Matchbox toy cars which are also under the Mattel brand now.\r
\r
Small toy cars have become popular due to Matchbox collectibles. Though expensive, you can buy Matchbox toy cars reasonably inexpensively now, and its a great hobby to get into because you never know which toy car will become a collectible in time, and increase in value.\r
\r
To protect your toy car investment Jabu and Lani recommend getting a toy car transporter which are available at the same stores where the best toy cars are bought. Matchbox car carriers and car cases are pretty much the same thing.\r
