\r
Giant Isopod\r
We head to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean for our first nightmare creature. The giant isopod looks like something out of Aliens and is an armored sea critter that can grow up to twenty inches in length. \r
\r
Coconut Crab\r
Youd think with a name like the “Coconut Crab” the animal itself would be a little cuter. Well… Its named that way because it can crush coconuts in its incredible pincers. They can grow up to three feet long and weigh up to nine pounds. \r
\r
Anglerfish\r
This next addition is a fish with a bright idea, but a horrific face. The Anglerfish is an expert hunter that uses a bioluminescent growth atop its head to lure smaller fish into its terrifying jaws. They live in the darkness of the deep sea, but when seen in the light these beasts are straight out of a nightmare. \r
\r
Japanese Giant Hornet\r
We travel to Japan for our next entry, for a monster that does real ecological work… as well as being truly terrifying. The Japanese Giant Hornet is the worlds largest, growing to two inches long with a wingspan a shade longer. \r
\r
Sea Pigs\r
Our next nightmare creature lives at the bottom of one of the deepest parts of the sea, the aptly named “Abyssal Plain”. The sea pig looks somewhere between gross and terrifying, but is just a relative of the sea cucumber and starfish. \r
\r
Goblin Shark\r
We head to the deep sea of the three major oceans for our next monstrosity, and this one is almost mythical in its hideousness. The Goblin Shark is nature at its weirdest, displaying its pink skin and living in the very depths of the sea. \r
\r
Bullet Ant\r
The next creature straight out of your nightmare inhabits the floor of South American rainforests and is known by many terrifying and descriptive names. The Bullet ant can grow to over and inch long and holds the record for the most painful sting in the insect world. \r
\r
Puss Caterpillar\r
Sometimes the nightmare creatures you fear live right in your backyard. This might be the case if you live in the Southern United States, between Carolina and Florida. The Puss caterpillar looks a lot like a Persian cat, and seems like it would be really soft and fuzzy… for a caterpillar. But even if you were tempted to pet it… dont. \r
\r
Giant Stingray\r
Our next contender in the nightmare creature feature is found in freshwater lakes and rivers in Indochina and Borneo. The giant stingray is exly what it sounds like. This creature lives on the bottom of rivers and lakes and can tip fishing boats with its immense weight. \r
\r
Indian Taipan\r
What nightmare creature list would be complete without a trip to Australia, the country with the possibly the most dangerous wildlife in the world. The Indian Taipan is a creature that will strike you with fear if you see it, and it lives in the semi-arid deserts of central Australia. \r
\r
Ophiocordyceps unilateralis\r
Sometimes creatures look scary, but are harmless. Sometimes these terrifying animals can cause severe pain to humans, but this next entry is the base for some horror s and intense natural study. The Ophiocordyceps fungus can be found in tropical rainforests and is known by many as the zombie fungus.
