M3 closure: Stranded motorists enjoy sunshine as bomb squad investigate alert
STRANDED motorists made the most of the sunshine when the M3 was closed for bomb disposal experts to tackle a “suspicious object” on the carriageway. Thousands of people were stuck as the motorway linking London and Southampton was partially closed between junctions 9 and 11 in both directions just before 4am yesterday. An Army bomb disposal robot was seen dragging a black rubbish bag off the hard shoulder, which appeared to contain a liquid and a yellow substance. Motorists stuck on the motorway had picnics, walked their dogs and changed nappies, but some were seen driving the wrong way down the hard shoulder, adding to the chaos. George Vitelis, who was stranded at Winchester services, said: “It’s quite a strange situation – there are babies having their diapers changed and guys playing golf. It’s moments like this that you see the best of the British spirit."The sun is shining, the weather is warm, I'm quite happy here to be honest. It would be different if I was stuck in the car with a load of screaming kids, but I'm not.”The motorway reopened in both directions at 3.20pm – nearly 12 hours after it closed at 3.49am.. 00FastNews.
