In this first , we introduce the concept of comparing and measuring the lengths of objects using some of Douggies favourite toys - Play Dough and Lego. Starting with units that the children can understand and engage with really helps them to understand the concept of measuring using different units and provides a natural transition into using standard units.\r

There are a lot of stages that children go through when learning to measure length. We begin by using non-standard units of measure to engage Douggie in the process and help him to understand the important concepts and terminology. We develop his sense of relative length and highlight the importance of using a common unit for comparisons.\r
