When it comes to building muscle a lot of people say that you should train within 8-12 reps per set, as this is the so-called ideal range for muscle hypertrophy.\r
\r
But does this mean that you cant build muscle if your rep ranges are higher?\r
\r
While there are some general guidelines for working out, there are no real hard set rules for what constitutes a muscle building workout. You can build muscle using all kinds of set and rep patterns and different training protocols. There really isnt a Right or Wrong way to go about it.\r
\r
In the case of push ups, these are excellent for building up the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Push ups are usually done for high reps, sometimes 50+ reps per set. The advantage of this is that you are pumping a lot of blood into the muscles, you are keeping your muscles under tension for long periods of time, and another big plus is that push-ups are a bodyweight exercise.\r
\r
Doing bodyweight exercises have a unique muscle building benefit because they move your entire body through space. This puts you in a 3 dimensional environment and will ivate your central nervous system to a greater degree, compared to exercises where you just move your limbs.\r
\r
In my opinion the best way to structure a muscle building workout is to cycle your training from phases of heavy low rep power training, moderate rep bodybuilding training, and high rep bodyweight and conditioning training. This will give your body a full spectrum of muscle stimulation and help to keep you progressing with your workouts.\r
