Each week nearly a million people migrate from rural to urban centres to find a better life. Cities are ill-prepared to deal with the mass influx, resulting in illegal slums lacking water, sanitation and resources to support this exploding population. This documrntary goes deep inside the lives and homes of some of the poorest people living in the slum cities of Mumbai, India and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Here the constant fear of eviction, spread of disease, rampant drug dealers and well-armed street gangs are just a part of daily life. The reporter interviews slum residents and those who have broken out of the cycle of poverty. Footage from deep inside these illegal slums exposes the severity of this global and human issue. A must-see for all human geography and urban studies classes.
