Congress leader from Karnataka’s Kodagu district TP Ramesh has resigned from the party after he was caught misbehaving with a woman MLC Veena Achaiah during Independence Day celebrations at Madikeri.
Science and Technology Minister M E Seetharam had earlier affirmed that the party would take action against the minister, who was caught inappropriately holding the hand of Achaiah.
"I was present on the day and this sort of behavior is not acceptable. However close they may be, such behavior is not acceptable on a public platform. He should have resigned as KSSIDC chairman," Seetharam said earlier.
According to Deccan Herald, Ramesh, who is the Chairman of Karnataka Silk Marketing Board Limited, on Tuesday resigned from his post after the incident. It is likely that he was asked to step down by the ruling Congress government.
Not only did he quit his post as board chairman but also had to sacrifice his primary membership in the party, adds the report.
It has come to light that the leader handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister Siddahramaiah in Bengaluru yesterday, after Seetharam had expressed his dissatisfaction after the episode.
Apart from the resignation letter, Ramesh also submitted his version of the incident describing what had happened during the programme; however, video evidence clearly suggests that the leader was trying to hold the hand of the MLC, following which she gently removed his hand.
In his letter to the KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao, Ramesh said he treats Achaiah as his “sister” and he was just enquiring about her health.
“It would be suffocating for seniors like me to continue further in the organisation," Ramesh wrote in his letter to KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao.
The action was most likely taken against him after Kodagu District Congress Committee President Shivu Madappa submitted a report to senior authorities, demanding disciplinary action against Ramesh for humiliating the party.
