Chinese Vendors Using African Children To Advertise Products

by Jeff DonlanVendors in the online Chinese marketplace Taobao are facing a backlash for allegedly using African children to deliver messages about their products.As reported by Beijing Youth Daily, the children are taught short phrases in Mandarin to either sell products are deliver greetings. The videos have become a popular way to deliver birthday greetings and advertisements, and can be purchased for as little as $1.In one clip, a group of children say to the camera in Mandarin, “Want to see pretty girls? Use Jike! Want funny stories? Use Jike! Want GIFs? Use Jike! Only 10 yuan, really great!” According to Sixth Tone, other videos show children advertising X-rated live streams.Taobao says it’s investigating some of its vendors, but that hasn’t stopped the controversial practice.
