Germany fights Turkey for finals at Euro 2008 championship

Germany in first Euro final in 12 years Live Online

It was a valiant effort by the handicapped Crescent Stars who had all sorts of injury and disciplinary problems ahead of their vital semifinal against beaten 2006 world cup host nation and semifinalist Germany.

The Turks who only had three substitutes available on the bench one of which is a goalkeeper, who would be an outfield player, started strongly and looked the better team and it was no surprise that they took the lead midway through the first half. The Germans replied four minutes later and at half time the scores were leveled at 1-1.

At the resumption neither team looked willing to take full control of the game and even though Germany had majority of the possession, it never made a significant impact on the scoreline. Germany was gifted a goal through the eccentricity of veteran goalkeeper Rustu, who came off his line to a cross that really he had no chance of getting to. His mistake gifted the Germans who are masters of the aerial ball; their second to make the score 2-1 to Germany with only a few minutes remaining in regulation time.

The drama of Euro 2008 was far from over and Turkey once again showed the resilience that earned them the title of come back kings when they found an equalizer with about four minutes remaining.

Extra time was beckoning and the Turks were beginning to show signs of fatigue and with a minute remaining, the Germans took the winner to book their place in their first Euro final since winning in Euro 96. They now await Spain or Russia who complete for the other place in the final in Austria on Sunday.
