Exactly three years after the last sermon was held in the Iraqi Christian city of Qaraqosh, locals celebrated their first mass in the visibly damaged Church of the Immaculate on Sunday, August 6.Located 20km southeast of Mosul, Qaraqosh is Iraq’s largest Christian city with, at one point, a population of 50,000 people. In August, 2014, it was overrun by Islamic State militants, forcing many to flee. In October, 2017, the city was liberated during the Iraqi army’s Battle for Mosul.
