More huskies are abandoned because of Game of Thrones

U.S. — Game of Thrones, the popular medieval fantasy TV show based on the books by George RR Martin, has inspired people in so many different ways — from cosplay to parties — and now, the GOT craze has moved on to huskies for their resemblance to the show's direwolves.

Fictional direwolves are an unusually large and intelligent species of wolf, and a few of them are adopted by the show's characters. However, some fans are treating these fictional animals like cool accessories, so they've bought or adopted huskies in the hopes they would grow up to look like direwolves, San Francisco's SFist reported.

After finding out that raising a pet actually takes a lot of work, these fans abandoned their furry friends. As a result, the sickening trend has resulted in more dogs being left homeless and being shipped to dog rescue centres and shelters.

Two California dog rescue facilities have recently reported a major rise in husky abandonment. Northern California Sled Dog Rescue president, Angelique Miller told SFist that these fans are just following the trend of what they think is cute.

This incident is not the first reported rise in dog abandonment cases influenced by pop culture. Similar upticks in dogs being left homeless also occurred with husky breeds after the releases of the movies Eight Below and Snow Dogs.
