by Jonathan SangerXiamen’s Fire department is now battling blazes remotely. This new machine is called the TAF-20, or Battle Axe. Its powerful water turbine can blast water a distance of 300 feet horizontally and almost 200 feet straight up in the air. It also has sensors that allow the machine to see through smoke that can’t be pierced with the naked eye.The robot can also be ladder-mounted to fight fires at higher elevations.Designed by EmiControls and Magirus, Australia showed off its version of the TAF-20 back in 2015.The robot is not a replacement, but an important tool to aid firefighters. And by taking on tasks closer to the flames, it can also keep firefighters farther from danger. We wouldn’t mind having one in our city either.
