The death of Pahokee, Florida man who succumbed to complications in May from a nearly 60-year-old gunshot wound, has been ruled a homicide, reports WPBF.
John Henry Barrett was shot in the midst of an altercation with a friend. The year was 1958 and Barrett was 19 at the time, notes Palm Beach Post.
He suffered an injury to the spine that left him partially paralyzed and dependent upon a cane for mobility. Despite the physical challenge, Barrett went on to go to college and serve as the minister of an area Baptist church for more than three decades.
He began to feel ill in May and went to the Glades Central Hospital. Barrett died there just days later.
WPEC reports that causes were initially listed as septic shock, paraplegia, and a urinary tract infection, and the death was determined to be natural. The medical examiner for Palm Beach county reviewed the case and found Barrett’s ailments were connected to the decades-old gunshot.
While the death was reclassified as a homicide, the person responsible has already served a prison sentence for the shooting.
