by Andrew CaringiA traditional Lebanese wedding went horribly wrong when someone accidently fired an AK-47 into a wedding party. Luckily there were no fatalities, but the shots hit and injured a wedding photographer, who had to be rushed to a nearby hospital during the ceremony.Celebratory gunfire was once common at big events in Lebanon and are sometimes heard during graduations, birthdays, and even funerals. While this tradition is becoming less popular, mishaps are common enough that Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces recently launched a crackdown.By asking citizens to report people who fire off live rounds in public, the security forces were about to track down and arrest 42 people. As it stands, there is a law from the 1950s that prohibits celebratory gunfire, but the fine is a bit outdated: most offenders are given a fine of about 60 cents USD.This recent resurgence of this trend has led to a new bill in Lebanon’s parliament to increase jail time for those who get a little too rowdy at the party. The proposed bill calls for a sentence of up to 20 years.
