Only in Negeri Sembilan: Hari Mantai

Hari Mantai is a traditional celebration unique to Negeri Sembilan.

The word mantai comes from the Negeri Sembilan dialect, which signifies the preparation of butchered meat. This special occasion is either be celebrated on the eve of Ramadan, Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Haji. In some districts, the celebration of butchered meat on the eve of Ramadan is also known as ‘mogang’. Although termed differently, the meaning remains the same.

The traditional mantai celebration, which is synonymous with the customs and culture of Malays in Negeri Sembilan, said to be observed by only a few these days, mostly in the districts of Seremban, Jempol, Kuala Pilah, Tampin, Jelebu and Rembau.

For this Raya, crew from The Malaysian Insight travelled to Kampung Serting Ulu, a small village in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan to witness and understand the significance of mantai celebration.
