We've all experienced being out of breath, whether it's walking up the stairs, doing a strenuous workout, or when we're stressed and anxious. But there are three times when being out of breath is abnormal, and it's important to know the signs. 1. If it's sudden and severe: Catching your breath out of nowhere or having it wake you up in the middle of the night could be a sign of heart problems. If the symptoms are worse when you lie down, this could indicate heart failure or lung disease. 2. If it comes with other symptoms: Shortness of breath accompanied by other symptoms could be a warning sign of a heart attack. Symptoms would include wheezing, chest pain or pressure, fatigue, or clamminess. 3. When you're doing something that doesn't usually take your breath away: If you experience a shortness of breath during activities you're used to doing, it could potentially be a sign of heart disease. If any of these instances ring a bell, it's time to talk to your doctor.
