by Jeff DonlanQatar has signed a $12 billion deal to buy F-15 fighter jets from the U.S., only days after President Trump accused the country of funding terrorism.By saying Qatar “has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level,” Trump appeared to contradict the more nuanced approach of his departments of defense and state. Qatar is a key U.S. ally and home to the largest U.S. airbase in the Middle East, serving as a center for U.S. operations in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. However, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and also accused the country of funding terrorism. The Pentagon said the jet sale will increase security cooperation between the U.S. and Qatar.
