MUNICH — A 26-year-old female police officer was shot in the head after a man seized a service weapon from another officer and fired it at a Munich train station on Tuesday.

According to a press release issued by the Munich police department, the incident began when two officers were called to the Unterfoehring station to respond to a brawl aboard a train in the morning. A man allegedly involved in the fight suddenly tried to shove an officer in front of an incoming train and seized his service pistol.

The suspect then fired the weapon, wounding a female officer and two bystanders. The officer suffered severe injuries to her head but still managed to return fire, wounding the suspect.

The suspect fired at least five shots until the gun was emptied, the BBC reported. He then fled the scene but was soon captured by other officers.

The suspect has only been identified as a 37-year-old German man born in Bavaria. Munich police announced that there is no evidence indicating the incident was linked to terrorism and they believe the suspect was a one-time perpetrator. The state prosecutor says the suspect’s only criminal past involves possessing a small amount of cannabis, and he will be charged with attempted murder in this case.
