Since President Trump announced Thursday that the U.S. will be exiting the Paris climate agreement, many national leaders have voiced concerns and criticisms, notes CNN.
North Korea recently joined them.
According to the state-run news agency KCNA, in a statement, the nation’s foreign ministry characterized the U.S. exit as, “…the height of egoism and moral vacuum seeking only their own well-being even at the cost of the entire planet and, at the same time, a short-sighted and silly decision ignorant of the fact that the protection of the global environment is in their own interests."
It also noted, “The selfish act of the U.S. does not only have grave consequences for the international efforts to protect the environment, but poses great danger to other areas as well."
In announcing his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement, President Trump was clear that much of the reason for abandonment was to protect the nation's industries.
He said, “Compliance with the terms of the Paris Accord and the onerous energy restrictions it has placed on the United States could cost America as much as 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025 according to the National Economic Research Associates. This includes 440,000 fewer manufacturing jobs -- not what we need -- believe me, this is not what we need -- including automobile jobs, and the further decimation of vital American industries on which countless communities rely."
