KARACHI: Veteran lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada passed away after protracted illness on Friday (today) in Karachi.

Sharifuddin Pirzada was born in Burhanpur in India’s Madhya Pradesh in 1923.

Pirzada remained secretary to Pakistan’s founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1940s.

He served as Pakistan’s foreign minister during Pakistan’s first military ruler General Ayub’s tenure from 1966-68 after resignation of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

He also served as attorney general for former military rulers Yahya Khan and General Zia-ul-Haq.

Pirzada was the head of former president Pervez Musharraf’s defence team in 2014 when he faced sedition charges relating to his proclamation of a state of emergency in 2007.

He authored several books on law, Pakistan’s judicial history and his association with the founding father of the country.
