President Trump has spoken out against the recent Portland attack in which two men were killed trying to defend a pair of young women--at least one of whom appeared to be Muslim--from a man who was said to be harassing them with hate speech.
On Monday, the president tweeted, “The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable. The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance. Our prayers are w/ them.”
The post may or may not have been in response to an outpouring of support for an open letter written by veteran journalist Dan Rather.
The Facebook message, addressed to President Trump, asks him to publicly acknowledge the heroes who lost their lives--Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Ricky John Best--because, in Rather’s words, “They were brave Americans who died at the hands of someone who, when all the facts are collected, we may have every right to call a terrorist.”
Notably, the tweet condemning the attacks was not issued from Trump’s primary account @realDonaldTrump but from his presidential @POTUS account.
