Federal authorities and emergency workers in northern New Jersey are in the midst of a 4-day nuclear attack drill, reports WPIX.
According to WNYW, the purpose of the exercise, called Operation Gotham Shield, "is to practice how to assess, treat and evacuate victims during a potential nuclear attack in the New York City."
Simulations, which began on Monday, include setting up makeshift emergency rooms, establishing a triage facility outside MetLife Stadium, and running through radiation check and decontamination protocols.
The effort is overseen by numerous federal agencies including the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, and FEMA.
Authorities offered assurances that the drill is strictly routine and is in no way a response to any suspected nuclear threat.
Nonetheless, it occurring at a time when North Korea is escalating its weapons testing has caused concern among some.
