Budapest Protesters March After Education Amendments Signed Into Law

Protesters against new laws that could lead to the closure of Budapest’s Central European University (CEU) took to the streets once again on the evening of Monday, April 10.On the same evening, Hungarian President Janos Ader signed the amendments to the Higher Education Act into law, local media reported.Tens of thousands of people took part in a similar demonstration on Sunday. The new legislation bans non-EU registered higher education institutions from awarding diplomas.The CEU was founded by Georges Soros in 1991 and is registered in the US. The university’s chairman said he was “determined to remain in Budapest.”
